MCME Staff AMA​

Hello Everyone!

So for the month of June the Staff and I have decided we'd like to treat everyone to a new Staff AMA. For those who are not familiar with the acronym AMA it stands for "Ask me Anything". AMAs are a prolific things notables associated with Reddit who like to run them with celebrities, well renowned people within their discipline etc. The public are able to post and address random questions to these people and in turn they respond to the questions.

We see this as an opportunity for the newer members of the community to get to know the people who occupy the various staff Ranks

The schedule is as follows;

9th to 16th - Build Moderator (Artisans, Steward, Foreman)
16th to 23rd - Bounder
23rd to 30th - Valar​

Before we get this ball rolling we just need to let you know that rules still apply so please do not address anything vulgar or explicit as the TOS states so if you really want to get to know a certain player, do it by your own discretion outside MCME

What is the most important task that you valar do to keep the community going?
 
I will pose the same questions I did for the other threads:

If you were a Magic: The Gathering card what would you do? (This can be a vague answer if you don't know the game. Those that answer will be rewarded with me creating the card for them.)
If you could be an animal, what animal would it be and why would it be a cat?
Do you want to build a snowman?

I can do a lot of things within my own discretion, such as adding or editing the rules, terms of service, privacy agreements, work methods, ranks, permissions, software used, deploying or removing servers, ...

Basically I ensure the community's finance, and I'm constantly learning about new technologies to deploy or how to handle things. I decide and purchase the software licenses that we need to have services, such as the website for example, or teamspeak. I'm also in charge of renting, maintaining, and configuring the various servers on which these services run (which are two dedicated machines and one VPS each running on Linux). Services include things like: Having DDoS mitigation, reducing bandwith, reducing server load through deploying optimisations (caching, way how filesystems are mounted, ramdisks, ...), TeamSpeak, the website, and all the game servers.

I'm also the central person for when stuff goes wrong: server instability or crashes, issues and complaints being brought up by people, and so on.
Most of my time goes into reading and learning about servers in general and various software packages. The rest goes into configuring and handling discussions. Last time I actually played Minecraft was years ago.

In this world this hypothesis doesn't really matter to me, but I guess being a sexist and my debaucherous behaviour would have me banned.

I deal with promotions and demotions of build staff. I always try and find the best candidate to support the staff team which is not easy at times. Neither is confronting old staff members with inactivity. Most of all I try to keep every staff member happy in the role they have and give them as much freedom as I think they can handle.
Keeping the atmosphere light and good is in my eyes key to keep the creativity high so that we can perform at the best of our ability's at all times. Beside keeping the morale high I make sure that projects get the proper attention and live up to the (high) standards.

Also you will often find me trying to find new ways to improve the servers efficiency in regards to how the ranks work and smoothing out the support structure around the build aspect.
While the build aspect of the server is pretty important to me I keep the community in even higher regards. Without the community I would have stopped building long ago. So I try to be available for feedback and questions coming from the community and I'm often trying to look for ways to involve the community in the build aspect of MCME.

No idea on the card haven't played magic in ages. But I guess some kind of a nature card. I can be vicious when pushed in a direction I dont want to go but otherwise pretty much passive.

I'd probably be a fish. I like to have others around me and I enjoy water more then any other element.

Thats an hard question because we have such an broad community with so many (different)interest I like enjoy the entire community. But for me the most important task is to keep as much people happy with the way the server is going on and around minecraft.
 
I could have asked this on any of the AMAs, but anyway: how often do staff meetings occur? Is it a set time interval (1 month, 2 months, etc.), an important event (such as the beginning of Gondor), or something else?

Just a quick response for this. I usually set meetings up distinguished to the of ranks Ranger, Bounder, Valar but mainly coordinate the Staff one on a once month interval.

Sometimes I setup random meetings in response to upcoming Special Events, a major critical issue etc.

The agenda to the meetings contain topics which carry on from discussions taking place on the Staff Forums. They may also consist of Build Moderations topics which I like to talk to Cre before hand just to give him a heads up that during the meeting he opens that section up.

If you ever become Staff, you will hear my voice alot. That "doesn't talk much" face most people know me for goes out the window.
