Introduction
The vast fields of Pelennor are finally getting the love they need to live up to the spectacle of Minas Tirith. With the Anorien revamp and subsequent remake of the Rammas Echor, it’s only natural that the Pelennor fields were to follow. The Project will mainly be worked on in regions, moving north to south replacing the old empty fields with newly tilled ones. Plans are also in action to make the Pelennor live up to its description of “townlands” and thus more farmsteads, hamlets and smaller villages will be added over time. Due to the age of most of these areas that will be worked on a lot of it still remains as world painter terrain and will thus be retouched as well. Background lore
Book Quotes
Return of the King - Minas Tirith:
“For ten leagues or more it ran from the mountains’ feet and so back again, enclosing in its fence the fields of Pelennor: fair and fertile townlands on the long slopes and terraces falling to the deep level of the Anduin”
Return of the King - Minas Tirith:
“Pippin could see all the Pelennor laid out before him, dotted in the distance with farmsteads and little walls, barnes and byres, but nowhere could he see any kine or other beasts. Many roads and tracks crossed the green fields, and there was much coming and going :wains moving in lines towards the Great Gate, and others passing out.”
Return of the King - Minas Tirith:
"The townlands were rich, with wide tilth and many orchards, and homesteads there were with oast and garner, fold and byre, and many rills rippling through the green from the highlands down to Anduin. Yet the herdsmen and the husbandmen that dwelt there were not many, and the most part of the people of Gondor lived in the seven circles of the city, or in high vales of the mountain-borders, in Lossarnach, or further south in fair Lebennin with its five"
The Atlas of Middle Earth - The White Mountains, Rock Type:
“Only two rock types can be identified in the White Mountains with any assurance: limestone (metamorphosed into marble in certain areas) and intrusive igneous”
Etymology
Tolkiengateway - Pelennor Fields:
The name Pelennor translates to "fenced, encircled land" in Sindarin. Christopher Tolkien has noted that the first element derives from the Elvish root/element pel- ("go round, encircle"); the other elements appear to be end (from enedh "middle")' + (n-)dor ("land, dwelling"). The field was called by several other names as well, such as Fields of Pelennor, the Pelennor, and the townlands.
