So I've taken up the task of mapping Moria. I've been working on this for maybe a week, and it's very far from finished, but here's what I've done so far. I'll be updating it as I go.

Each pixel = 5×5 blocks
Green = Path of the Fellowship
Light Grey = Floor / road
Medium Grey = Bare cavern
Dark Grey = Chasm / surface deeper than level
White = Overlapped halls/passages on same level
Cyan = Water

I'll at some point enlarge the images and add labels for notable landmarks, halls, and caverns.

From the 3rd Level up (the upper map height layer) there is a discrepancy between the levels as they are marked in moriaplans, and as they appear in-game.

Path of the Fellowship

6th/7th Level [y > 160]

5th/6th Level [y = 110-160 ]

4th/5th Level [y = 50-100]

3rd/4th Level [y < 50]

2nd Level [y > 200]

1st Level [y = 150-200]

1st Deep [y = 90-150]

2nd Deep [y = 50-90]

3rd Deep [y < 50]

Updated the images as far as I've done.

I'll post my procedure later for anyone who wants to help, because this is rather time consuming to do alone.

Step One: Take Down Coordinates

When taking down the coordinates for a chamber/cavern, I start from whatever spot, and make my way around. I normally fly when I do this. Now I do one level at a time - see the headings to the maps to see the y-coord range for each level.

The coordinates I take down are that of the corners. Since each pixel on the map is equal to 5×5 blocks, I stand/float two blocks away from the nearest wall/walls (or at least not closer than one block or farther than three blocks).. Like so (where the red dot is where I stand to take down the coord):

As for what height I fly/stand at when I take down the coords, it can be on the floor if the wall is moreorless flat; otherwise for cavernous spaces I float at the height where the space is widest / protrudes furthest into the wall - normally this is at the highest y-coord of the level, but not always. So (where the horizontal line is the upper limit of the level):

For the largest caverns this must be repeated for every level the space spans.

Step Two: Convert the Coordinates

Of course the pixel coordinates on the image don't remotely match up to the in-game coordinates, so I have to math it out a bit. First, since it's a 5:1 scale, I divide the coord by 5, then I add however much is needed to match it to the coords of the image.

For most of Moria these are the formulae:
- X-coordinate ÷5 + 1997 = Image x-coord
- Z-coordinate ÷5 + 1544 = Image y-coord

For the 3rd/4th Level and up they are:
- X-coordinate ÷5 + 1982 = Image x-coord
- Z-coordinate ÷5 + 1922 = Image y-coord

Step Three is plotting the coordinates on the image and filling in the gaps. This is the least time consuming step, which I'm happy to do on my own all the way.

Now if anyone would like to help take down coordinates, they can do so, and post the coordinates or converted coordinates in this thread. We ought to coordinate in this thread who is taking coordinates where. I would appreciate it.

Currently I am mapping the Great Mines, just west of the Chamber of Light, which will be my next stop when I've finished the mines.

Get someone to let you map out the other 4 deeps

Hi Space_Lemmon,
I started a map of Moria one or two weeks ago, we started a little team and one of us found this post....
Are you still working on the Map? If yes, maybe we could work together ;D
Greetings,
Haldir
