Lore:
Helm's Deep is a gorge in White Mountains near the gap of Rohan that contains Rohan's main fortress: the Hornburg. The region and fortress are renamed after Rohan's 9th King, to commemorate his last stand against the Dunlending invasion in the Long Winter of TA 2759.
The fortress itself was constructed by Gondorians long before Rohan was given to the Horse Lords as thanks for their aid in battle. The fortress and caves were originally called Aglarond by the Gondorians, and then Súthburg by the Rohirrim. It was built on a rocky promontory that stuck out into the valley, and was said to have never been taken. The Deeping Wall was built from the fortress across the valley to protect the caves behind it.
